In the bustling heart of Midtown East, Manhattan, Stantec, a leading sustainable design and engineering firm, recently marked the grand opening of the East Midtown Greenway. This vibrant esplanade, the second segment of the East Midtown Waterfront Project, has added nearly 2,000 linear feet of bikeways and walking paths to the East River waterfront, transforming the cityscape.

Bridging Connections and Crafting Foundations

At the nexus of innovation and urban connectivity, the greenway boasts a distinctive design comprising three key elements. The pedestrian bridge at 54th Street not only serves as a vital link for pedestrians and bicyclists but also seamlessly connects the community to the verdant expanse of the greenway. Below, an in-water structure forms the robust foundation for the linear park above, showcasing the prowess of engineering excellence.

Stantec's Collaborative Symphony with the City

The realization of the East Midtown Greenway was no small feat, requiring Stantec's meticulous coordination with various city agencies. From civil engineering to public art coordination, the firm adeptly navigated multifaceted project requirements. One of the standout challenges involved crafting the in-water structure to support a substantial load of topsoil and large trees while ensuring sustainability through stormwater capture. The ingenious solution utilized tub girders, allowing for the accommodation of 60 sizable trees and 1,000 cubic feet of soil without compromising the structure's sleek profile.

Artistry and Greenery Blend Seamlessly

Adding a touch of artistic elegance, Stacy Levy, the acclaimed artist, designed custom pavers for the greenway adorned with diatom imagery, mirroring the natural elements of the East River. The greenway unfolds in distinct "scenes" such as Birch Point, the South Dune/Pollinator Meadow, the Bluff, the Grove, and the North Dune/Wetland Forest. Each section showcases a unique tapestry of plant species, trees, and rock formations, creating a harmonious blend of artistry and nature.

Nicole Ogrosso's Perspective

Nicole Ogrosso, project manager at Stantec, shared her enthusiasm, stating, "Cities worldwide aim to enhance bikeability and walkability, but new pathways should also be destinations in themselves." Ogrosso commended the East Midtown Greenway for offering a distinctive waterfront experience that seamlessly combines beauty and park-like serenity. As the greenway comes to life, Stantec extends congratulations to the New York City Economic Development Corporation and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation on the successful grand opening.
