Rutgers-Camden Begins Construction of $60M Facility Downtown

Rutgers University–Camden embarks on a $60 million construction project aimed at revitalizing two blocks in downtown Camden.

Transformation of Historic Properties

The project involves the transformation of 14 vacant historic properties and several empty lots along the 400 block of Cooper and Lawrence streets. These properties will be repurposed to house units of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, currently scattered across two separate buildings.

Preserving Historic Integrity

While the new construction will introduce a three-story facility, it is noteworthy that the integrity of the historic buildings along Cooper Street will be preserved. The new structure will rise behind the existing facades, ensuring architectural continuity within the historic district.

Expanding Facilities and Housing

The development on Lawrence Street will include both office spaces and residences for visiting faculty, a move that promises to breathe new life into currently dilapidated areas. Additionally, the complex will feature outdoor spaces designated for gatherings, fostering a sense of community among Rutgers students and local residents.

Investment in the Future

At the groundbreaking ceremony on May 9, Rutgers–Camden Chancellor Antonio D. Tillis emphasized the significance of the project as "a substantial investment in the future of our institution, our students, and the people of Camden.” With a student population of approximately 6,100 and over 1,000 faculty and staff members, Rutgers University–Camden is poised to make a lasting impact on the city's landscape and its community.
