NJ's Thomas A. Edison Park Set for Major Redevelopment to Feature 14 Sports Fields

Middlesex County is seeking public feedback on a proposal to transform a section of Thomas A. Edison Park in Edison into a major athletic complex. The plan includes constructing over a dozen new multi-sport artificial turf fields, a cricket field, and additional biking paths. The public can submit comments on the plan until early Wednesday morning through the National Park Service’s website.

Environmental Review and Public Response

The proposed development spans 11 acres of the 171-acre park and requires approval from the National Park Service due to a long-standing agreement about how the land can be used. An environmental assessment of the project, conducted by engineering firm AECOM, has been open for public review for 30 days. Some residents, including the Edison Greenways Group, oppose the plan due to concerns over artificial turf, citing potential health risks and environmental issues. They advocate for a halt on the creation of new artificial turf fields in the county.

Proposed Changes and Environmental Impact

Currently, 77 acres of the park are developed with fields and paths, while 55 acres are forested. The project would repurpose 4.5 acres of the wooded area for the new sports complex. In response to environmental concerns, the county plans to plant a successional meadow in a 1-acre area to extend the forested space, according to the National Park Service's report.

Vision for a Premier Sports Facility

Middlesex County Commissioner Charles Tomaro expressed enthusiasm for the project, calling it a "destination athletic complex" that would reduce the need for families to travel out of state for sports tournaments. The expansion aims to accommodate various sports, including baseball, soccer, lacrosse, rugby, and cricket, making the park a regional sports hub.

Historical Background and Legal Requirements

The park’s land was acquired by the county from the federal government in 1964 through a program that mandates public recreational use. If the land is no longer used for public parks, it could be returned to federal ownership. The county is requesting an amendment to this agreement to move forward with the sports complex plan.

Features and Facilities in the Proposal

The project would include 14 artificial turf fields, a cricket field, 16 tennis courts, a fieldhouse, restrooms, concessions, and parking for 1,350 vehicles. New pedestrian and bicycle paths would connect the park to nearby areas, including Middlesex College. The plan also includes water infrastructure upgrades and a new entrance.

Local Concerns Over Costs and Accessibility

Residents, including Edison Greenways Group member Walter Stochel, have raised concerns about environmental damage and potential costs associated with the project. Currently, the park is free to use, with teams paying a small fee to reserve fields. However, there is worry that the proposed complex could attract out-of-state teams, crowding out local users and possibly introducing higher usage fees. The total cost of the first phase of the county’s investment plan, which includes the park project, is estimated at $350 million.
