Miami International Airport Moves Ahead with $7 Billion Central Terminal Upgrade

Miami International Airport (MIA) is gearing up for significant expansion, expecting to accommodate 77 million travelers and 4 million tons of freight by 2040. This involves a $7 billion redevelopment plan spread over five to 15 years.

In addition to the redevelopment plan, MIA is undergoing $1.7 billion in maintenance upgrades covering various facilities such as elevators, escalators, and bathrooms.

Central Terminal and Concourses E & F Improvements

The redevelopment plan includes enhancements within the Central Terminal and Concourses E and F, involving demolition, renovations, and new building construction. A portion of the Central Terminal work will be financed by federal grants totaling $27 million, part of a larger FAA grant awarded to several Florida airports.

Ongoing Construction and Grants

US Deputy Secretary of Transportation Polly Trottenberg visited MIA's ongoing construction projects, including Concourse E-H ticket counter renovations, funded by a $15 million FAA grant. MIA broke ground on a new parking garage with 2,240 spaces, aiming to improve parking availability for passengers and employees.

Previous Accomplishments and Future Phases

Several projects under the redevelopment plan have already been completed, including a new baggage handling system and renovations to various concourses. Scheduled for completion in 2031, Phase One includes expanding Concourses E and F, introducing post-security corridors, and adding holding rooms and office spaces. Expected to be completed in 2033, Phase Two focuses on renovating main terminal areas and introducing a new vertical circulation core for passenger circulation.

Key Features of Both Phases

Both phases include a new sterile corridor, secured connections between concourses, and expanded concession spaces. Additionally, they will feature passenger conveying systems and dedicated delivery points. The redevelopment plan outlines spaces for future hold rooms, facilitating passenger flow and maximizing commercial opportunities, as well as expanding the Concourse F checkpoint.

Miami International Airport's redevelopment plan is a comprehensive effort to modernize and expand its facilities to accommodate future growth in passenger traffic and cargo handling, with Phase One currently underway and Phase Two scheduled to follow suit.
