The Gateway Development Commission (GDC) has announced a major milestone for the Hudson Tunnel Project (HTP), securing a total of $16 billion in funding. This includes $6.88 billion from federal sources and $4.06 billion in loans, marking the largest federal funding commitment to a rail project in U.S. history.
Senator Charles Schumer has long championed the Gateway project, describing it as a "labor of love." He expressed his excitement over overcoming numerous challenges, emphasizing that the project is now moving forward with significant financial backing from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). Schumer highlighted that Gateway's future is secure, calling it the most critical public works project in the nation.
The HTP aims to construct two new tracks and renovate the existing North River Tunnel, resulting in four modern tracks connecting New York and New Jersey by 2035. This ambitious project is anticipated to create 95,000 jobs and generate $19.6 billion in economic activity. Construction officially began in November 2023, with heavy construction set to commence shortly.
