Queens Borough President Donovan Richards has thrown his weight behind the ambitious plan for NYC's inaugural professional soccer stadium in Willets Point, with certain conditions. Richards' endorsement marks a pivotal moment for the $780 million project, which includes a 25,000-seat stadium for Major League Soccer's New York City Football Club, a 250-room hotel, 80,000 square feet of commercial space, and 1,400 units of affordable housing.

Borough President's Conditions Set the Tone

In a significant move, Richards outlined conditions that accompany his approval of Phase II of the Willets Point redevelopment. The conditions, while not binding, emphasize local hiring requirements, inclusion of street vendors from the area, and enhanced benefits and infrastructure upgrades for the communities of Corona, Flushing, and East Elmhurst. Richards stressed the need for tangible commitments to the well-being of the surrounding areas.

A Transformation Unfolding

The soccer stadium is a key component of Phase II, following the commencement of Phase I, which is already in progress. Phase I involves 1,100 units of affordable housing, a school for grades kindergarten through eighth grade, and additional retail and community space. In his official recommendation, Richards advocated for at least 30% of contracts and hires in Phase II to be allocated to minority- and women-owned businesses and local residents.

Local Engagement and Community Benefits

Richards proposed initiatives to further engage the local community, such as discounted NYCFC match tickets for residents and additional funding for bus and subway upgrades. He emphasized the importance of supporting capital improvements around Flushing Meadows Corona Park, including sports fields and playgrounds. These measures aim to ensure that the project contributes meaningfully to the well-being of the community.

Economic Development Corporation Welcomes Endorsement

Jeff Holmes, spokesperson for the New York City Economic Development Corporation, expressed enthusiasm for Richards' endorsement. Holmes highlighted the transformative impact of the Willets Point project, projecting nearly $6 billion in economic impact over the next three decades, along with the creation of over 1,550 permanent jobs and 14,000 construction jobs. The City Planning Commission will now play a pivotal role as the project advances to the next phase of approval.
