Boston Invites Community Ideas to Develop 3K Public Housing Units

The Boston Housing Authority (BHA), in collaboration with the Housing Innovation Lab, is reaching out to developers and community members for ideas on potential sites for new public housing. This initiative comes as part of Mayor Michelle Wu's strategy, announced during her recent State of the City address, to develop 3,000 new units of public housing across the city.

Revitalizing Public Housing Design

The BHA acknowledges that it has been decades since the last new public housing was built in Boston. This new project aims not only to address the city's housing needs but also to transform the perception and design of public housing. The goal is to create mixed-income communities that foster resident leadership and maintain long-term affordability.

Innovative Approaches to Development

Beyond location suggestions, the BHA is also looking for innovative ideas on how to construct these housing units. They are open to proposals that incorporate public housing into both publicly and privately owned lands. Furthermore, the BHA encourages concepts that integrate public housing with commercial spaces, community centers, or educational facilities, offering a holistic approach to community development.

Call for Proposals

The BHA invites community members and developers to submit their ideas by August 7. This Request for Information for Bids (RFI) represents a significant opportunity for the public to shape the future of Boston's housing landscape.
