Rice University recently celebrated the groundbreaking of Susan and Fayez Sarofim Hall, an 83,000-square-foot, $76 million project set to open in fall 2025. Named after lead donors, the late founder of Houston's largest money management firm, the building will house the Department of Art.

A Center for Creativity
The new space aims to meet increased student demand for humanities courses while providing a cutting-edge environment for art faculty and students. Positioned in the campus's southwest corner alongside the Moody Center for the Arts and Shepherd School of Music, it aspires to establish a vibrant arts district.

Fostering Collaboration and Innovation
Rice's president emphasized the building's role in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and experimentation, positioning it as the heart of contemporary art. Groundbreaking marks a pivotal moment in Rice's history, consolidating scattered art classes for the first time.
Innovative Design and Flexibility

Designed by Rice alumnus Charles Renfro's team, the building pays homage to its predecessors while incorporating modern exhibition areas, labs, studios, and more. Its movable walls and adaptable design ensure it can evolve with changing needs over time.
Propelling Art and Humanities Forward

Renfro envisions Sarofim Hall as a space to mix students, faculty, and the public, propelling art making at Rice into a bold future and cementing humanities as a core value.
By blending innovation, collaboration, and flexibility, Sarofim Hall promises to be a dynamic hub for creativity and academic excellence at Rice University.
