Zimmerman Playground Completes $6.9 Million Renovation in The Bronx

What The Upper Level Adds

The upper portion of the playground now includes new play equipment with updated safety surfacing, along with swings designed for children of different ages and abilities. A new spray shower provides another summer recreation option, while shaded seating gives families and caregivers places to gather near the play areas. The existing handball wall was also resurfaced and transformed with a colorful mural, adding a visual feature to the renovated space.

What The Lower Level Adds

The lower level has been redesigned around a new synthetic turf field that can support sports, movie nights and other community events. Two basketball courts were added, replacing the site's previous single court. The new configuration includes one full-size court and one junior-size court, with adult fitness equipment located nearby. The renovation also added bleachers, picnic tables and benches throughout the park. A dedicated seating area at the corner of Britton Street and Barker Avenue was designed to support the neighborhood's regular bingo nights and other community gatherings.

What Accessibility And Site Improvements Bring

Accessibility was a major focus of the reconstruction. New ramps connect the upper and lower levels, eliminating the separation that previously made it difficult to move between the two portions of the playground. The project also introduced new water service, including a bottle-filling station and drinking fountains. Reconstructed brick and stone veneer walls line portions of the property, while reduced interior fencing creates better sightlines across the park. New shade trees were planted along the sidewalks and around the synthetic turf field, adding greenery and additional shaded areas for visitors.

What The Playground's History Adds To The Project

Zimmerman Playground has been part of the Bronx for more than 90 years. NYC Parks acquired the property in 1931 using funds from the War Memorial Fund, and the playground opened on July 15, 1934. It was one of nine War Memorial Playgrounds dedicated by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia to New Yorkers who were killed during World War I. The playground is named after Corporal Louis Zimmerman, an NYPD officer and Bronx resident who served with Headquarters Company, 305th Infantry, 77th Division. Zimmerman was killed in action on November 5, 1918, just six days before the Armistice. The site was last renovated in 1996 and 1997, making the latest reconstruction a significant update to a long-standing community park.
