WinnCompanies, alongside federal, state, and local officials, has unveiled Stone Mill Lofts, one of the first all-electric mixed-income multifamily properties in Massachusetts. The $39.2-million project involved the adaptive reuse of Lawrence’s oldest mill, transforming it into 86 rental housing units. This development marks a significant milestone in Lawrence’s history, revitalizing a 19th-century manufacturing landmark for modern residential use.
Historic Restoration and Modern Energy Efficiency
WinnDevelopment president Larry Curtis emphasized the symbolic importance of the project, noting that the city’s historical roots are reflected in the restoration of this manufacturing landmark. The restored mill now features 21st-century energy-efficient systems, providing much-needed housing for mixed-income households.
Sustainable Design and Environmental Impact
The Stone Mill Lofts is designed to be fully fossil-fuel-free, utilizing advanced energy-efficient technologies such as heat pumps and energy recovery systems. This design reduces energy consumption by 46% and lowers greenhouse gas emissions by 33% compared to a traditional gas-powered multifamily building. WinnCompanies estimates that the project will prevent 177 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually, contributing to a more sustainable future.
