Trinity East Village Senior, 90-Unit Affordable Housing Community, Breaks Ground in Houston

What the Development Will Include

Construction is underway on Trinity East Village Senior, a new 90-unit affordable senior housing community in Houston's Third Ward. The development is designed for adults 55 years and older with low and extremely low incomes, providing long-term affordable housing in one of the city's historic neighborhoods. The project is being developed through a partnership between The NHP Foundation (NHPF), Trinity East Village Community Development Corporation, and Housing Alliance HTX, with support from the City of Houston Housing & Community Development Department and Trinity East United Methodist Church. Of the 90 apartments, 60 units will serve as replacement housing for residents of Cuney Homes, which is currently being redeveloped through the federal Choice Neighborhoods Initiative.

What This Means for Third Ward

The project represents a significant investment in preserving affordability and helping longtime residents remain in the neighborhood as redevelopment continues throughout Third Ward. Residents will have access to modern apartments, shared amenities, and on-site supportive services provided by Operation Pathways, The NHP Foundation's resident services organization. Programs will focus on health, financial stability, independence, and community engagement for older adults. The development is expected to serve households earning an average of approximately 41% of the Area Median Income (AMI).

Project leaders described the groundbreaking as the result of years of collaboration between nonprofit organizations, community leaders, faith-based partners, and public agencies.

The City of Houston contributed $4 million toward the project, underscoring its commitment to expanding affordable housing opportunities for seniors.

"The City's $4 million investment in Trinity East Village Senior reflects our commitment to ensuring older adults can age with dignity in the communities they call home," said Ryan Bibbs, Assistant Director of the City of Houston Housing and Community Development Department.

Community leaders also emphasized that the development fulfills a long-standing vision to transform church-owned land into affordable housing that allows longtime residents to remain rooted in Third Ward.

What Happens Next

Construction is being led by NRP Construction, with completion anticipated in 2027. The project is supported through a broad public-private partnership that includes the City of Houston, Housing Alliance HTX, Trinity East United Methodist Church, Midtown Redevelopment Authority, Rice University's Real Estate Group, financing through the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs' Low Income Housing Tax Credit program, Bank of America, Hudson Housing Capital, and Churchill Stateside Group. Once complete, Trinity East Village Senior will provide affordable housing and supportive services that help older adults remain active members of the Third Ward community while addressing the area's growing need for senior housing.
