  • Toyota Motor North America announced it will invest $3.6 billion to expand its San Antonio manufacturing campus at 1 Lone Star Pass, San Antonio, TX, adding a second vehicle assembly line to support Tacoma truck production and doubling the plant's size by 2030.
  • The expansion will create 2,000 new jobs and add 2.5 million square feet to the Toyota Texas facility, with Tacoma production transitioning from Toyota Motor Manufacturing Baja California over an approximate four-year period.
  • The investment will bring Toyota's total commitment to its San Antonio operations to $8.3 billion since the plant broke ground in 2003, and will expand annual production capacity from roughly 200,000 to 350,000 units.

A Major Expansion for Toyota Texas

Toyota Motor North America has announced a $3.6 billion investment to expand its San Antonio manufacturing campus with a second vehicle assembly line. The expansion will enable Tacoma assembly alongside the Tundra and Sequoia and support rear axle production, with the rear axle facility expected to begin production this fall. Toyota officials said they selected San Antonio after what they described as a "highly competitive" site selection process, though they did not disclose which other locations were under consideration. The second assembly line is scheduled to begin operations in 2030, at which point the San Antonio campus will have effectively doubled in footprint and production output.

Jobs, Workforce and Economic Impact

The expansion will create 2,000 new, high-quality jobs at Toyota Texas. Toyota's local workforce is expected to climb to approximately 6,000 team members, supported by 23 on-site suppliers and their employees. The project has drawn strong support from state and local officials, with San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones saying the expansion reflects the city's workforce and its willingness to invest in Toyota's continued growth, adding: "This is a significant recognition of the talent our city offers." Texas Governor Greg Abbott also weighed in, noting that the expansion "will deliver economic opportunities to generations of San Antonio families and further cement Texas as the premier destination for world-class advanced manufacturing."

Shifting Production from Mexico to Texas

Toyota Motor North America will transition Tacoma production from Toyota Motor Manufacturing Baja California to the expanded Toyota Texas plant over an approximate four-year period. The move allows the automaker to sidestep uncertainty regarding U.S. trade policy with Mexico and Canada. The Tacoma is the top-selling mid-size pickup in the United States, making the production shift a strategically significant decision for both the company and the San Antonio campus. Once the transition is complete, Toyota Texas will serve as the sole production site for the Tacoma, Tundra and Sequoia.

Key Project Details

The $3.6 billion expansion will add a second vehicle assembly line and roughly double the size of the existing 2.7-million-square-foot plant by 2030, expanding annual capacity from roughly 200,000 to 350,000 units. Toyota broke ground on its San Antonio plant in 2003 and began producing Tundra pickups in 2006, and the latest expansion will bring total investment in the campus to $8.6 billion. Toyota Motor North America President and CEO Ted Ogawa stated:

"By expanding our San Antonio plant, we are deepening our commitment to American manufacturing, creating meaningful and sustainable jobs, while advancing our mission to deliver high-quality vehicles that meet the changing needs of customers today and into the future."
