The Bass Museum Opens Free Satellite Gallery in Miami Beach’s Collins Park

The Bass Expands Its Campus Into Collins Park

The Bass Museum, under the leadership of Executive Director Silvia Karman Cubiñá, is expanding its presence in Miami Beach with a new satellite gallery located inside Collins Park. The new venue, called The Rotunda at The Bass, will open to the public on March 28 and provide free admission year-round. The gallery is located inside the park’s distinctive circular building, expanding the museum’s footprint beyond its primary facility. The project reflects a broader effort by the museum to bring contemporary art into more accessible public spaces across Miami Beach.

What The Rotunda Gallery Will Deliver

The building originally opened in 1962, designed by architect Herbert A. Mathes as part of the former Miami Beach Public Library complex. The structure served as an assembly hall for meetings, lectures, and community gatherings. Its exterior features a sculptural sand-cast concrete mural titled “The Story of Man” by artist Albert Vrana, which has remained a recognizable landmark in Collins Park. After the library complex was demolished in the 1980s, the rotunda was preserved due to its cultural and architectural significance.

What The Renovation Means For Collins Park

Following a $5.79 million renovation by the City of Miami Beach, the building has been restored and transformed into a modern exhibition space. The renovation upgraded mechanical systems, added a new entrance lobby and restrooms, improved accessibility, and enhanced surrounding landscaping and walkways throughout the park. The gallery will debut with “Welcome Wall (2015–2026)” by Cameroonian artist Pascale Marthine Tayou, continuing the site’s legacy as a gathering place for cultural exchange. The opening will coincide with The Bass’s annual Art Outside Picnic, a free community event featuring live music, art activities, and public programming designed to activate the park’s growing art installations.
