The historic Winnetka Pacific Theatres in Chatsworth is set to undergo a significant transformation as Tesla, the leading electric vehicle manufacturer, takes over the site. This shift highlights a change in the use of space to meet the evolving needs of the community and the rising demand for electric vehicles, according to a report from the Los Angeles Daily News.
At the Los Angeles City Planning Commission meeting on June 25, Tesla presented its vision for repurposing the former movie theater complex into a cutting-edge car delivery hub and service center. This project is part of Tesla’s broader expansion in the San Fernando Valley, complementing its existing locations in Van Nuys, Burbank, and Agoura Hills.
The 118,784-square-foot facility, initially a drive-in theater, will be extensively renovated. Nearly 900 of the 1,242 existing parking spaces will be dedicated to storing Tesla vehicles awaiting delivery, with the remaining spots reserved for employees, customers, and visitors. The building’s interior will be redesigned to include a showroom, a customer service lounge, and a pre-delivery inspection area, all aimed at enhancing the car delivery process and customer experience.
Tesla is committed to maintaining the architectural integrity of the building while integrating modern elements. The iconic crown atop the theater will be preserved, though with a contemporary twist. This approach ensures the site retains its historical significance while serving new functions.
While the site will undergo minor modifications, such as the removal of a few trees to improve access for delivery trucks and customers, Tesla emphasizes its commitment to minimizing environmental impact. The company is collaborating closely with the Chatsworth Neighborhood Council, which has shown support for the project.
The extensive renovations are expected to be completed by late 2025. This project follows Tesla’s development of a supercharger station, diner, and movie theater in East Hollywood, which began construction in September 2023. Located at 7001 West Santa Monica Blvd., this prototype aims to inspire similar future developments.
