Royal Caribbean Breaks Ground on $345 Million Terminal at PortMiami

What The New Terminal Will Bring to PortMiami

Royal Caribbean Group and Miami-Dade County have broken ground on a new Cruise Terminal G at PortMiami, launching a $345 million redevelopment aimed at expanding the port's capacity for some of the industry's largest ships. The project replaces the former Terminal G building, which opened in 1999 and was demolished beginning in July 2025. Once complete, the new facility is expected to handle ships carrying as many as 7,000 passengers, including next-generation vessels such as Royal Caribbean's Icon-class ships.

 

 

What The Terminal Will Include

The new Terminal G is being planned as more than a passenger processing facility. The complex will include the main cruise terminal, a multi-level parking garage and a ground-level intermodal transportation hub for buses, shuttles and rideshare vehicles. The terminal's layout is also designed to improve passenger circulation. Different levels will be used to separate passenger movements during embarkation and disembarkation, with the goal of reducing congestion and creating a smoother arrival and departure experience. The project is also being designed to meet LEED certification standards, adding sustainability and efficiency features to the new facility.

 

 

What Royal Caribbean And Miami-Dade County Are Investing

The Terminal G redevelopment is structured as a public-private partnership between Royal Caribbean Group and Miami-Dade County. Royal Caribbean Group is contributing 54% of the total project cost, or about $186 million, while Miami-Dade County is funding the remaining 46%, or approximately $159 million. The Miami-Dade County Commission approved the project in November 2023. At the groundbreaking, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, PortMiami Director and CEO Hydi Webb, and Royal Caribbean Group Chairman and CEO Jason Liberty highlighted the project's importance to the region's cruise industry and local economy.

What The Construction Timeline Looks Like

Work on the redevelopment began with demolition of the previous Terminal G structure in July 2025. The project reached its formal groundbreaking in January 2026 and is expected to remain under construction through 2027. PortMiami and Royal Caribbean are targeting completion and opening by the end of 2027. Until the new terminal is operational, some Royal Caribbean sailings may continue using alternate terminals at PortMiami.

 

 

What The Project Means for Cruise Operations

The demolition and reconstruction of Terminal G have required changes to some cruise terminal assignments. Royal Caribbean has notified passengers on certain sailings that their ships may depart from other PortMiami facilities during construction. For example, Freedom of the Seas has used MSC Cruises' Terminal AA for certain departures. Terminal AA opened in April 2025 and spans approximately 492,678 square feet across four levels, providing additional capacity while Terminal G is being rebuilt. These temporary arrangements are expected to continue as construction progresses.

 

 

What Terminal G Means for PortMiami

The new Terminal G will join PortMiami's growing network of large cruise facilities, including Royal Caribbean Group's Terminal A, which opened in 2018, and MSC Cruises' Terminal AA. Once completed, Terminal G is expected to serve ships across Royal Caribbean Group's brands, including Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises. The investment comes as cruise ships continue to grow in size and passenger capacity. For PortMiami, the new terminal represents an effort to keep pace with that growth while improving the experience for passengers arriving and departing through what officials continue to promote as the world's leading cruise homeport.
