New Jersey

In a much-needed transformation, Newark Penn Station is about to receive a significant boost with the allocation of $59 million from a historic $4.5 billion federal transportation funding package. This funding will not only address the cosmetic concerns but also pave the way for an improved commuter experience.

A Modernized Station on the Horizon

The $59 million set aside for Newark Penn Station is part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing public transportation in New Jersey and the surrounding region. With this funding, the station will embark on a journey towards modernization, which has long been overdue. Not only will this allocation enable the replacement or refurbishment of 11 elevators and 17 escalators, but it will also cover the replacement of aging benches in the station.

Changing Lives Beyond the Aesthetics

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka emphasized that the impact of this investment extends far beyond cosmetic improvements. He pointed out that the transformation of Penn Station will not only benefit the city but also have a positive ripple effect throughout the region. The funding is part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021, which also includes $3.8 billion for the Hudson River Tunnel and $300 million for the rehabilitation of the 90-year-old Dock Bridge over the Passaic River.

Gateway Development Commission Fully Funded

This financial injection means that the Gateway Development Commission has secured all the funding it requires to move forward with its projects. Senator Cory Booker highlighted the significance of this investment, describing it as a pivotal day for the region, the state, and Newark. He explained that these mass transit investments will have long-lasting benefits, ultimately pushing the Gateway project towards completion, improving regional connectivity, and modernizing mass transit systems. Furthermore, it will stimulate economic growth and create thousands of job opportunities for New Jersey residents.

Continued Advocacy for Infrastructure Funding

Senator Cory Booker reiterated his commitment to working with the Biden Administration and congressional colleagues to secure additional funding for the rebuilding of transportation infrastructure in New Jersey and the region. The $59 million allocation for Newark Penn Station is just one part of a broader effort to improve transportation systems and ensure a better quality of life for millions of commuters.
