Ballers, a new locally-based company, is set to open an innovative entertainment and sports complex in Fishtown. The facility will feature a variety of amenities including a turf field, racket sports courts, bars, and more, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Location and Development

The complex will be situated in a repurposed power plant turbine, the last undeveloped part of The Battery, a new hotel and apartment complex near Penn Treaty Park. The property is owned by Lubert-Adler, who hired the design firm Good City Studio to develop the site.

Concept and Expansion

Good City Studio founders Amanda Potter and David Gutstadt conceptualized Ballers, envisioning it as part of a national chain of hospitality-focused sports complexes. Gutstadt announced on LinkedIn that Ballers plans to launch pop-up locations across the US this spring, followed by permanent sites in major cities such as Philadelphia, NYC, Boston, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Dallas.

Philadelphia Project Details

The Philadelphia project is estimated to cost above the "single-digit millions," as stated by Gutstadt. The Fishtown location will have multiple levels, each offering distinct features:

  • First Level: This floor will house an almost 5,000 square foot turf field available for rental, with a bar and restaurant overlooking the field.
  • Second Level: Dedicated to racket sports, this floor will include two squash courts, three padel courts, and six pickleball courts. It will also feature golf simulators, practice areas with sand bunkers and putting zones, showers, cold plunge tanks, and an infrared sauna. Additionally, a bar will serve coffee and juice during the day and alcohol at night.

Accessibility and Pricing

While specific pricing details are still being finalized, the company is considering different options for peak hours and frequent user packages. Unlike the exclusive Fitler Club, which is also owned by Good City, Ballers will be open to the general public. Gutstadt emphasized that the complex aims to be accessible to all Philadelphians, catering to a broad audience.

Strategic Location Choice

Fishtown was selected for its vibrant local community and convenient access. Potter highlighted the advantage of customers being able to walk to the venue, as well as the easy drive via the 676 for those farther away.

Ballers aims to create a welcoming sports and entertainment hub in Fishtown, offering diverse activities and amenities to attract a wide range of visitors from the local community and beyond.
