Foundations are being laid for a new 12-story residential building at 280 Eighth Avenue in Chelsea, Manhattan. Designed by SLCE Architects and developed by Red Apple Group, the structure will cover 58,021 square feet, with 64 rental units averaging 819 square feet, along with commercial and community facility spaces. It sits at the corner of Eighth Avenue and West 24th Street.

Construction Progress

Excavation began in mid-January after demolishing the previous single-story commercial building. Recent photos show significant below-grade work with the foundation slab and perimeter walls taking shape. Construction could reach street level by summer, with illustrations depicting the building's design.

Design Details

The building features an eight-story volume with a light gray brick façade at the corner, flanked by narrower sections standing 12 stories high and clad in dark gray paneling. Balconies are integrated throughout, with a setback above the eighth story leading to a glass-enclosed upper section. A mechanical bulkhead sits atop the flat roof parapet.

Projected Completion

Anticipated completion is scheduled for November 2025, according to on-site information.
