Queens Community Board 7 overwhelmingly supports the proposal for a $780 million soccer stadium in Willets Point. The community's decisive 37-2 vote underscores its pivotal role in the city's comprehensive land-use approval process. The spirited meeting at St. Luke Roman Catholic Church saw Queens residents, union workers, and soccer enthusiasts gather in anticipation of the vote.

Major League Soccer's Queens Homecoming

With resounding applause and chants of "NYCFC," the Major League Soccer team potentially finding a home in Queens marked a historic moment. The Vice Chairman of CB7 Queens expressed excitement for the culmination of 15 years of hard work. As the proposal moves forward, the borough president, city planning commission, City Council, and the mayor will play crucial roles in the evaluation process.

Transforming Willets Point: A Vision Unveiled

Mayor Eric Adams revealed the transformative plan for Willets Point in November 2022, envisioning a new phase in the area known for its auto repair shops. The proposal, presented by Related Companies, in partnership with MLS's New York City Football Club, includes a 25,000-seat stadium, 2,500 "affordable" housing units, a hotel, and a 650-seat public school. Notably, all projects, except residential developments, are set to be union-built.

Queens Speaks: Mixed Reactions and Economic Impact

While the majority inside the church voiced support for the project, outside, dissenters criticized the land-use process. The city estimates a significant $6.1 billion economic impact over the next 30 years, generating jobs. However, critics, like those from Queens Neighborhoods United, express concern over the affordability of the venue for local residents, viewing it as the privatization of public land.

A Diverse Spectrum of Voices: Uniting and Dividing Queens

Inside the meeting, Queens residents clad in NYCFC merchandise expressed enthusiasm, citing the project's potential benefits. Union leader Rafael Morales highlighted the promise of job growth, particularly in union positions. Yet, skepticism persists, with lifelong resident Margaret Flanagan calling for more clarity and obligations in the broader land-use proposal. NYCFC Vice Chairman Marty Edelman thanked CB7 for its "vote of confidence" and reiterated the club's commitment to building in the five boroughs, bringing soccer to the heart of Queens.
