In a significant move reflecting the airport's growth, the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority has approved a contract on October 18th, setting the stage for the next phase of expansion for Terminal C at Orlando International Airport. This marks a significant step in enhancing the airport's capacity to accommodate its surging passenger numbers.

Meeting the Demand for More Gates

The driving force behind this expansion is the remarkable increase in passenger numbers. With the Phase 2 Program, Terminal C will see an extension that includes adding 16 to 24 aircraft gates. Ricondo & Associates, a Chicago-based aviation consultancy with a branch in Orlando, will be responsible for outlining the development trajectory. Their task is to create a Program Definition Document (PDD) that outlines the program's prerequisites, presents a preferred operational concept, facility blueprint, and refines cost projections.

Preparation for Future Expansion

The recent approval underlines the airport's proactive approach, indicating its readiness for expansion in the years to come. Terminal C, with an initial investment of $2.8 billion, has been operational since September 2022, boosting the airport's capacity to serve up to 60 million passengers annually. The airport is already experiencing a strong business phase, with projections nearing 58 million passengers by year-end.

Upgrades and Long-term Plans

In addition to the expansion of Terminal C, the airport has approved contracts for a comprehensive overhaul of the Automated People Mover systems, rehabilitation initiatives for taxiways, and unveiled a strategic roadmap for the future. These investments align with the Airports Council International's emphasis on the vital role of airports in strengthening employment, the economy, environmental goals, and passenger experience. Local airports are expected to have the financial flexibility necessary for current and future projects.

Orlando International Airport is setting the stage for a brighter future with its commitment to enhancing capacity, infrastructure, and passenger experience.
