Project Origins and Partnership

Willets Point was first introduced by Mayor Adams in November 2022, in collaboration with several entities including the New York City Economic Development Corporation, Councilmember Francisco Moya, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, the New York City Football Club, and Queens Development Group. The project aims to transform Willets Point into a vibrant and sustainable community.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The development is projected to generate $6 billion in economic impact, creating over 14,000 construction jobs and more than 1,500 permanent jobs over the next three decades. It aligns with Mayor Adams' economic recovery blueprint and leverages infrastructure investments to foster equitable community development and extensive housing opportunities.

Construction Progress and Phase Two Details

Construction on the first phase, comprising 880 units of 100% affordable housing, is already underway and progressing ahead of schedule, with completion anticipated by the end of 2026. Phase two, now approved, will add 220 affordable homes specifically designated for low-income seniors, emphasizing inclusivity and community support.

Statements of Support

Andrew Kimball, President and CEO of NYCEDC, hailed the approval of phase two as a historic moment for Queens and New York City. He commended Mayor Adams' leadership, the efforts of Councilmember Francisco Moya, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, other elected officials, and private sector partners for their contributions to the project. Kimball highlighted the transformation of Willets Point from the 'Valley of Ashes' into a new neighborhood featuring the largest affordable housing project in four decades, essential open space, infrastructure enhancements, a privately financed soccer-specific stadium, and numerous quality job opportunities. He expressed NYCEDC's pride in contributing to the realization of this vision.

The approval of phase two for the Willets Point development signifies a significant step forward in the project's journey towards creating a thriving and inclusive community in Queens.
