Northeastern University Gets Approval for 23-Story Student Housing Development

The Boston Planning and Development Agency has approved Northeastern University's plans for a 23-story residence hall on Columbus Avenue. The project aims to accommodate up to 1,300 Northeastern students, addressing the university's commitment to reducing the impact of student housing on nearby neighborhoods.

Northeastern's Vice President for City and Community Engagement, John Tobin, emphasizes the university's dedication to community engagement and student housing. The proposed residence hall, occupying a property owned by Northeastern since 1997, will feature significant community space on the ground floor, including retail areas and programs focused on economic development, educational access, workforce development, and support for local businesses and organizations.

Building Features and Amenities

The building's design includes student amenity space on the second floor, offering social lounges, fitness facilities, study areas, staff offices, and laundry rooms. The upper floors will house approximately 1,300 beds, featuring four-bedroom units with private accommodations alongside some efficiency units. Additionally, streetscape improvements such as a dedicated bikeway, outdoor seating, and enhanced greenery are planned.
