What Makes the Mural a New Miami Landmark

Excel Miami has officially unveiled the tallest mural in the United States, giving the 24-story residential tower a defining visual identity in Downtown Miami's Arts & Entertainment District. Created by internationally recognized German artist Claudia Walde, known professionally as MadC, the colorful four-panel mural stretches across multiple sides of the building, with its largest section reaching 245 feet along the south elevation. The installation was completed ahead of the building's first resident move-ins, making it one of the final milestones before the project opens this September.

Clearline Real Estate Founder and CEO Jenny Bernell said the artwork reflects the vision behind the development. "The most memorable buildings tell a story. With Excel Miami, we wanted to create a place where architecture, public art, and everyday life intersect," Bernell said. She added that MadC's work has "transformed the building into a landmark visible across the city."

What the Development Includes

Located at 1550 NE Miami Place, Excel Miami is a newly completed 24-story residential tower developed by Clearline Real Estate and constructed by Shawmut Design and Construction. The project will deliver 427 rental residences, ground-floor retail space, and a variety of resident amenities in a transit-oriented location just steps from the School Board Metromover station. The development topped out in 2025 and has since advanced through its final construction phase, with exterior and interior work nearing completion. While additional project specifications such as total square footage and building height have not been released, the project represents another major multifamily addition to Miami's rapidly growing urban core.

What the Mural Adds to the Project

Rather than serving as a decorative feature, the mural was designed to become a permanent part of the building's identity. MadC, whose work is known for vibrant colors, layered compositions, and graffiti-inspired art, has created large-scale installations across public spaces, museums, and galleries around the world. For the construction team, completing the artwork required careful coordination during the final stages of the project. Shawmut prepared the building envelope and exterior surfaces while maintaining the construction schedule so the artist and her team could safely complete the installation. Alexis Leal, Head of Florida for Shawmut Design and Construction, said the project demonstrates how construction can contribute to a city's cultural landscape.

"We are focused on more than the physical structure. We are focused on how a building comes together, how it interacts with its surroundings, and how it ultimately contributes to the community," Leal said.
