On July 1, Miami-Dade County officials and representatives from the Mexican low-cost carrier Viva Aerobus marked the airline's first departure from Miami International Airport (MIA) with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a traditional mariachi performance.
New Routes to Monterrey and Merida
Viva Aerobus has introduced three weekly flights from MIA to Monterrey every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, as well as two weekly flights to Merida on Tuesdays and Saturdays. These routes will be operated by the airline's A320 and A321 aircraft, which accommodate 186 and 240 passengers, respectively.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava expressed her enthusiasm for the new flights, highlighting the convenience they offer to residents and visitors. She emphasized that Mexico has long been one of MIA's top international travel markets, and the new services to Monterrey and Merida will meet the strong demand for travel to these destinations.
Significance of Mexico to Miami International Airport
In 2023, Mexico was MIA's third-largest international market, accounting for nearly 1.6 million passengers. Viva Aerobus joins American Airlines in offering regular flights from MIA to Monterrey and Merida, further strengthening the connection between these regions.
Expanding Florida-Mexico Tourism Alliance
Eliel Campuzano Mendiola, acting Consul General for Mexico in Miami, underscored the importance of expanding the tourism alliance between Florida and Mexico. He highlighted Monterrey's role as an industrial, business, and educational hub, noting its high quality of life and the presence of over 4,100 foreign companies.
Viva Aerobus' Growth and Future Plans
Viva Aerobus is the fourth airline to commence passenger service at MIA this year, joining Condor Airlines, LEVEL, and Avelo Airlines. Founded in 2006 and based in Monterrey, the airline aims to operate 190 daily flights by 2024. CEO Juan Carlos Zuazua expressed excitement about the new routes, emphasizing their strategic importance in the airline's U.S. expansion and the connectivity they offer to over 30 key destinations in Mexico.
