Explore how "Friends" star Matthew Perry scaled down from his $35 million luxury homes to a more modest residence before his tragic passing, shedding light on his unexpected real estate journey.

A Tragic End in a Modest Home

Unfortunately, the actor's life came to a tragic end when he was found deceased in the hot tub of his Los Angeles residence, which he had acquired just three years prior. At the age of 54, Perry's recent downsizing moves revealed an unexpected shift in his lifestyle.

Embracing Modesty in Pacific Palisades

During the two years leading up to his passing, Perry sold around $35 million worth of luxury real estate and opted to reside in a rather humble, midcentury modern, ranch-style home. In August 2020, he purchased this renovated dwelling for $6 million, as documented in property records. Measuring 3,200 square feet, the house boasted four bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, and sat on a half-acre plot in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood. Despite its modest size by Hollywood standards, the home featured an ocean-view raised pool, floor-to-ceiling windows, oak floors, and two primary suites.

From Lavish to Lean

This dwelling marked a stark contrast to Perry's previous lavish residences. The same month he acquired his Pacific Palisades home, he put his "kick-ass Malibu home" on the market. Initially listed for $14.95 million, the 5,000-square-foot, four-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom property eventually sold for $13.1 million in January 2021, after two price reductions. Perry had purchased the home for $12 million in 2011.

The Penthouse Saga

In 2021, Perry parted with his 9,300-square-foot "mansion in the sky" penthouse in Los Angeles for $21.6 million, a substantial discount from its original $35 million asking price, but still higher than the $20 million he spent on it in 2017. The penthouse spanned the entire 40th floor of the Century Building on the ritzy Wilshire Corridor, offering breathtaking city views and four spacious terraces. Rihanna would later acquire the penthouse for $21 million in the same year.

Matthew Perry's life journey was marked by struggles with addiction and health issues, as candidly shared in his 2022 memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing." Despite his efforts to help others and a heart of gold, a sense of loneliness seemed to persist, with sources noting that he spent most of his days in solitude within his home.
