The overall redevelopment involves six historic buildings dating back to the 1920s, many of which had remained vacant for more than two decades. Construction is already underway on the first phase, which includes a 16-bed locked mental health rehabilitation facility and a 70-bed interim housing center offering wraparound support services. The newly approved funding will allow work to move forward on the permanent supportive housing component, completing another major piece of the campus. The project team includes PATH, Torti Gallas, MIG, and NAC Architecture.

Los Angeles County officials say the investment will help transform an underused public property into a long-term resource for residents experiencing homelessness and behavioral health challenges.

Supervisor Janice Hahn, who represents the area, emphasized the importance of repurposing the campus for community needs.

"The buildings on this corner of the Metropolitan State Hospital campus have done no one any good sitting vacant for years. We are transforming them into a mental healthcare village where people can get the help and treatment they need."

Hahn added that converting three of the buildings into permanent supportive housing is a key part of the county's long-term vision for the site.
