  • Katana Japanese Restaurant has opened its second Miami-area location on Coral Way after 33 years.
  • The family-owned restaurant is famous for its floating sushi boats and two-hour wait times.
  • The expansion brings the beloved concept closer to residents in Coral Gables, Brickell, Coconut Grove, and Little Havana.

Katana Opens Its Second Location

One of Miami's most beloved sushi restaurants has officially expanded. Katana Japanese Restaurant has opened a second location on 1760 SW 22nd St, ending years of speculation from fans who hoped the family-owned restaurant would eventually grow beyond its original home in North Miami Beach. The new restaurant gives diners south of the river easier access to one of Miami's longest-running Japanese dining institutions.

A Miami Institution Since 1993

Katana first opened in 1993 with just 24 seats surrounding its signature floating sushi boat conveyor. Rather than using a traditional conveyor belt, colorful plates of sushi, sashimi, nigiri, tempura, and other dishes travel around the dining room on miniature wooden boats. Guests simply select the plates they want and pay based on plate color at the end of the meal. The unique concept has helped turn Katana into a true Miami institution.

Why It Became So Popular

For years, two-hour waits became part of the Katana experience. Despite never accepting reservations, diners routinely waited hours for a table, drawn by the restaurant's affordable pricing, consistent quality, and nostalgic atmosphere. Earlier this year, the City of Miami Beach even proclaimed May 6, 2026, as "Katana Day," recognizing the restaurant's 33-year contribution to the local dining scene. Its expansion reflects both strong customer loyalty and continued demand.

What the New Restaurant Means

The Coral Way location dramatically shortens the drive for residents living in neighborhoods including Brickell, Coral Gables, Shenandoah, Coconut Grove, and Little Havana. Rather than traveling to North Miami Beach, longtime fans can now enjoy the same floating sushi experience from a more central location. The expansion also positions Katana to introduce a new generation of diners to one of Miami's most recognizable family-owned restaurants.

A Milestone for a Family Business

The second restaurant marks an important milestone for the family that founded Katana more than three decades ago. What began as a small neighborhood sushi restaurant has evolved into one of South Florida's most recognizable independent dining brands. With the new Coral Way location now open, Katana is poised to continue serving loyal customers while expanding its legacy across Miami.
