Ian Schrager co-founded Studio 54, invented the boutique hotel, and spent the last few decades building a case that luxury doesn't have to be stuffy. On July 15, he opens PUBLIC West Hollywood at 8300 Sunset Boulevard, the address where the original Standard Hotel ran from 1999 until its quiet death in 2021.
The Standard's ghost is hard to miss. That property defined a certain era of Sunset Strip cool. Schrager and partner Ed Scheetz paid to resurrect it, closing a $121 million construction loan from iBorrow in 2024 to fund the overhaul after initially financing the 2023 acquisition with roughly $87 million in debt from iBorrow and UK-based Reuben Brothers.
What It Is
The 137-room hotel is designed by British minimalist John Pawson and Alan Bell, with interiors by François Champsaur and Aurore Rouillay alongside Schrager's own ISC Design Studio. Three food-and-beverage venues anchor the ground level alongside a pool bar and a nightclub. Seventy-five percent of the public space sits outdoors. Rooms run from $495 a night and are soundproofed, with oversized projection screens in place of televisions.
What's not there is part of the pitch. No celebrity chef. No traditional front desk. No spa. Schrager has long called this "democratic luxury," a hotel designed to feel exclusive without the velvet rope exclusivity charges.
The Rooftop
The three-quarter-acre rooftop park is the detail everyone will talk about. At 16,000 square feet, it's less a bar and more a neighborhood: fire pits, picnic tables, swing sets, a running track, an outdoor gym, a movie screen, bocce ball, tetherball, volleyball, miniature golf, and unobstructed sightlines to the Hollywood Hills, Downtown LA, and the basin.
It's a strange and specific amenity for a 137-room hotel, and that's exactly the point. Schrager has been here before on Sunset Strip, having already opened the West Hollywood EDITION roughly a mile west. PUBLIC is his third Los Angeles project, and the rooftop reads like a direct statement: the Standard is gone, but the Strip isn't done.
