Key Points

  • Housing Trust Group (HTG) is partnering with nonprofit Girl Power Rocks to develop a mixed-use affordable housing project in Miami’s Overtown.

  • Mama Hattie’s House will feature a seven-story building with 91 residential units and nonprofit facilities aimed at supporting at-risk women.

  • The project will include $5 million in public funding, with more likely to be secured to support the affordable housing component.

Affordable housing developer Housing Trust Group and nonprofit Girl Power Rocks have submitted plans for a new community-focused development in Overtown, Miami. The proposed project, Mama Hattie’s House, aims to deliver both housing and vital services for women facing hardship.

Project Overview

Mama Hattie’s House is planned for a 0.65-acre county-owned lot at 430 N.W. 9th Street in Overtown. Girl Power Rocks already has a lease on the vacant land, and Housing Trust Group has joined as the development partner.

The building will be seven stories and total approximately 95,591 square feet.

What's Inside the Development

  • First floor: Parking for 60 vehicles.

  • Second floor: Nonprofit headquarters and educational facilities including classrooms, arts and music rooms, and healthcare spaces.

  • Third floor: Residential units reserved for Girl Power Rocks’ staff and clients.

  • Fourth through seventh floors: 70 affordable housing units managed by Housing Trust Group.

  • Amenities: Small gym on the top floor and a garden courtyard for residents.

Public Support and Funding

The Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency approved $5 million in 2023 to support the project. Given the nature of the development, Housing Trust Group is expected to apply for additional public funding to cover construction costs, which is typical for income-restricted housing developments.

Details on income limits or Area Median Income (AMI) targets for the affordable units have not yet been disclosed.

Community Impact

Mama Hattie’s House is designed to serve a particularly vulnerable population: at-risk women, especially those aging out of foster care or recovering from trauma. By offering on-site support services along with housing, the project provides a pathway toward stability and independence.

The location in Overtown places the project close to transit, job centers, and other support networks, increasing the chance of long-term success for its residents.

What's Next

Key details like income qualifications and construction timelines are still pending, but the pre-application signals forward movement. With HTG’s experience in affordable development and Girl Power Rocks’ mission-driven programming, the project has potential to become a local model for wraparound housing support.
