A historic Texas ranch, the Turkey Track Ranch, spanning around 80,000 acres and on the market for $180 million, has suffered extensive damage from wildfires spreading across the Texas Panhandle.

Extent of Damage and Losses

The owners reported that approximately 80% of the ranch's vegetation, including pastures, plains, and creek bottom, had been destroyed by the wildfires. They described the loss of livestock, crops, wildlife, and infrastructure as unprecedented in their history.

Despite the devastation, the owners expressed gratitude to the firefighters who worked to save the ranch from further destruction.

Historical Significance of the Ranch

The Turkey Track Ranch holds significant historical value as one of the original ranches in the Panhandle, with a rich Native American history and associations with the battles of Adobe Walls in 1864 and 1874.

Impact of Wildfires

The Smokehouse Creek Fire, the largest among several wildfires in the Panhandle, engulfed the ranch, leading to widespread destruction. It quickly became the largest and most destructive fire in Texas's history and the second most destructive in US history after the 1825 Miramichi Fire in Maine.

Government Response

In response to the crisis, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for 60 affected counties, acknowledging the devastating impact of the wildfires. President Joe Biden also directed federal officials to provide assistance to the affected communities during his visit to Texas.

Current Situation

As of Thursday, the wildfires had spread to nearly 1.1 million acres, with minimal containment, and resulted in two confirmed deaths. Over 500 federal personnel are engaged in firefighting efforts.
