Historic Kingsbridge Armory to Become Community Hub

The Bronx’s historic Kingsbridge Armory, long unused, is set for a remarkable transformation into a modern community hub with affordable housing. City and state officials have announced a redevelopment plan by 8th Regiment Partners LLC, a joint venture of Maddd Equities LLC and Joy Construction. The project, named El Centro Kingsbridge, will include an event space, sports field, cultural center, and 450 affordable apartments. Completion is anticipated in 2032.

A Bold Vision for the Bronx

Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the project's significance, describing it as a forward-thinking initiative to revitalize the Bronx. The plan includes resources for affordable housing, recreational facilities, and community spaces. Collaboration with Governor Kathy Hochul, local representatives, and residents has made this ambitious proposal possible.

The Armory’s Historic Legacy

Designed by Lewis Pilcher in 1917, the Kingsbridge Armory is the world’s largest armory, boasting over 570,000 square feet. Initially used by the U.S. military until 1994, the armory became city property in 1996. Recognized as a historic landmark in 1974, it has served various roles, including as a food distribution center during the pandemic.

Past Challenges and a Renewed Effort

Previous redevelopment attempts fell through, including plans for an ice-skating facility in 2016. In 2022, a renewed request for proposals was issued, informed by the "Together for Kingsbridge Vision Plan." This extensive public engagement process gathered input from thousands of residents and stakeholders to align the project with community needs.

Public-Private Partnership and Economic Impact

The $500 million redevelopment, backed by $200 million from city and state officials and additional funding from local and federal sources, represents a collaborative public-private effort. It is projected to generate $2.6 billion in economic activity over 30 years, create over 3,000 construction jobs, and provide 360 permanent positions.

Timeline and Next Steps

An environmental review will begin this winter, followed by a land-use review in 2025. Construction is scheduled to start in 2027, with the completion targeted for 2032. This transformative project aims to honor the armory’s rich history while creating a vibrant future for the Bronx.
