Construction at the James R. Thompson Center in downtown Chicago began on Monday, marking the redevelopment of the building for Google's new office space. The project, reported by the Chicago Business Journal, involves transforming the 1.3-million-square-foot structure, originally designed by Helmut Jahn, into a modern hub for the tech giant.

Collaborative Development with Prime | Capri Interests
Google is partnering with Prime | Capri Interests, a joint venture between The Prime Group Inc. and Capri Investment Group, who acquired the Thompson Center from the state for $105 million in 2022. Upon completion of renovations, Google intends to purchase the property outright.
Redesigned Features and Enhanced Experience

The renovated building will feature a heightened entry colonnade, creating a new ground-floor experience. Additionally, three levels of covered terraces will be added to increase natural light and provide access to green spaces. The design will incorporate biophilic elements, while retaining the original 17-story atrium.
Google's Long-Term Commitment to Chicago
Google's decision to establish its new office reflects its two-decade presence in Chicago. Karen Sauder, Google's Chicago site lead and president of global clients and agency solutions, highlighted the strategic importance of the new location, emphasizing its support for business operations across the Midwest and its potential to create an optimal working environment for employees.
