Miami-based developer Gencom has acquired a majority stake in the luxurious Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne resort from Brookfield Asset Management, according to Bloomberg. This significant deal, valued at over $400 million, marks Gencom's increased ownership, previously holding only a minority stake. The specifics of Gencom's ownership status, whether sole or shared, remain undisclosed. Representatives from Gencom have opted not to comment, and Brookfield's response is pending.

From Watermark Lodging Trust to Brookfield

In the year 2000, Watermark Lodging Trust concluded the construction of the expansive 302-room Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne resort, situated at 455 Grand Bay Drive on an island just east of Miami. Fast forward to 2022, Brookfield assumed control of the property when it acquired the Chicago-based trust for a substantial $3.8 billion. Last year, Brookfield further solidified its position by refinancing the complex with a substantial $210 million.

Another Notable Hospitality Sale in South Florida

This move by Brookfield represents its second major hospitality divestment in South Florida in recent years. Renowned as one of the world's largest real estate investors, Brookfield had previously sold the 1,000-room Diplomat Beach Resort for an impressive $835 million last year. Notably, this transaction holds the distinction of being the largest hotel sale in the United States since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Force in Miami's Hospitality Landscape

Gencom, led by Karim Alibhai, emerges as a prominent hospitality investor and developer in Miami. With the recent acquisition of the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Gencom adds another jewel to its portfolio. Notably, the company had previously secured a ground lease for the redevelopment of the James L. Knight Center into a three-tower complex in collaboration with Hyatt, showcasing its continued commitment to transformative projects in the city.

Gencom's Vision for Ritz-Carlton and Miami

As Gencom takes the helm of the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, the industry awaits insights into its strategic vision for the iconic resort. With a track record of groundbreaking developments, including the upcoming three-tower complex in partnership with Hyatt, Gencom's influence in shaping Miami's hospitality landscape is poised to deepen. The dynamic leadership of Karim Alibhai positions Gencom for a compelling future as a key player in the ever-evolving real estate scene.
