From Miami Heat Point Guard to Avison Young Power Broker: John Crotty

A Natural Evolution from the Court to Commercial Real Estate

For John Crotty, transitioning from NBA point guard to Principal on Avison Young’s Miami Capital Markets team wasn't about reinventing himself—it was about evolving. Having spent 11 years in the NBA, including stints with the Miami Heat and Utah Jazz, Crotty was already accustomed to discipline, communication, and performing under pressure. These same skills, he says, have become foundational to his success in commercial real estate.

“I knew I couldn’t play basketball forever,” Crotty reflects. “So I was committed to being a well-rounded person on and off the court.” His early interest in tangible assets over traditional finance led him to invest passively in real estate during his playing days. When retirement came, the next chapter opened naturally. He began his real estate career at Abood Wood-Fay in 2004, transitioned through Colliers, and ultimately landed at Avison Young as a Principal in 2014.

Translating On-Court Skills to the Boardroom

While the arenas may have changed, the mindset did not. "Discipline, work ethic and tenacity – coupled with strong communication skills – bode well in the real estate world," Crotty says. As a point guard, he was the floor general, ensuring teammates were in sync. That instinct translated directly to client relations and deal negotiations. "Communication is key both on and off the court."

At Avison Young, Crotty is surrounded by a powerhouse team—Michael Fay, David Duckworth, Brian de la Fe, and Philip Shapiro—who share his commitment to clear, consistent communication and client service. "Our team champions open and consistent communication to deliver the best results for our clients," he emphasizes.

Balancing Broadcasting with Business

Crotty's second act isn't limited to real estate. He's also a familiar face in Miami Heat broadcasts, where he has transitioned from radio and post-game commentary to live analysis, winning six Emmys along the way. Balancing two demanding careers comes naturally. “Time management is paramount,” he says, crediting his student-athlete days at the University of Virginia for instilling that skill.

Broadcasting, he notes, sharpens his ability to articulate complex situations—a skill equally valuable in boardrooms as it is courtside. "Broadcasting is an adrenaline rush that fuels my innate desire to perform under pressure, but it also requires me to articulate things clearly," he says.

Miami's Real Estate Boom and Avison Young's Edge

Looking ahead, Crotty sees Miami as a rising star in the global market. "Miami has become a tier-one market and global destination," he says. Investor appetite remains strong, and Avison Young’s entrepreneurial culture and global platform ensure the firm remains competitive. "We’re empowered to be nimble and adaptable," Crotty adds, highlighting the firm's employee ownership structure and investment in cutting-edge technology like Avison Young Technologies and the Office Busyness Index.

Navigating Complex and Meaningful Transactions

Among the many deals he’s worked on, one stands apart: the sale of the Champlain Towers site. Appointed by Judge Michael Hanzman, Crotty and his team navigated a highly sensitive and emotional transaction. "We were honored to complete the sale...and donated the majority of our fee to help the families," he recalls, underscoring a deep commitment to community.

Outlook for South Florida's Office and Industrial Markets

In South Florida's evolving market, Crotty remains optimistic. "On the industrial side, demand remains strong," he says, noting supply limitations. Office space, meanwhile, continues to hold firm as companies embrace hybrid models and Miami’s appeal endures. “I believe Miami is one of the most dynamic cities in the world.”

Advice for the Next Generation

For aspiring real estate professionals and athletes eyeing a transition, Crotty offers simple but powerful advice: "Find an experienced mentor... and be an active participant with your team."

From championship games to closing deals, John Crotty’s career trajectory is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the enduring power of communication—whether calling plays on the court or closing multimillion-dollar transactions in Miami.
