The expansion of Fifth Third Arena, a training facility for the Chicago Blackhawks at 301 S Damen Avenue in the Near West Side, has been approved. The Chicago City Council passed the approval in early October 2023.

What is the plan: The new structure will be built on a vacant lot adjacent to the existing arena and will feature two regulation-sized ice rinks, a central lobby with training facilities, lockers, and concessions, and various support rooms.

The bigger picture: The expansion is part of a broader, multiphase development planned for the site, which was previously owned by Rush Hospital. Future plans include the construction of several high-rises, potentially accommodating up to 1,200 residences and 600 hotel rooms. However, concrete details about this aspect of the development have not yet been released.

The costs and timeline: The first phase of the expansion is expected to cost $65 million and will be completed in the first quarter of 2026. Groundbreaking is scheduled for early 2024.

The new aesthetics: The new arena will be designed by Generator Studio, a Kansas City-based architecture firm. The exterior will feature a concrete panel facade with a glass storefront along the lobby. The path to the adjacent parking lot will be adorned with light landscaping.

Location, location, location: The parking lot will accommodate 219 vehicles. Future visitors will have convenient access to CTA bus services for Routes 50 and 126, as well as the CTA Blue Line at the Illinois Medical District station.

The expansion of Fifth Third Arena is a positive development for the Near West Side neighborhood. It will create jobs, boost the local economy, and provide a new community resource.
