  • Centennial Real Estate is investing $5 million to modernize the interior of Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills, Illinois.
  • The renovation will introduce upgraded dining areas, community spaces, a redesigned Kid's Zone, and modern finishes to create a more experience-driven destination.
  • The project complements the mall's broader $252 million mixed-use redevelopment, which includes hundreds of new apartments, retail space, and entertainment upgrades.

What the Interior Renovation Includes

Hawthorn Mall is undergoing a $5 million interior renovation as owner Centennial Real Estate continues transforming the longtime shopping center into a modern mixed-use destination. The improvements are designed to refresh the mall's interior while creating spaces that encourage visitors to spend more time dining, shopping, and gathering. The renovation includes upgraded lighting throughout the mall, modern furnishings, natural design elements, expanded lounge seating, and improved dining court areas. Visitors will also see a redesigned Kid's Zone and an updated wayfinding system to improve navigation throughout the property. Most of the interior improvements are expected to be completed by fall 2026.

What the Mixed-Use Redevelopment Has Added

The interior updates are the latest phase of Hawthorn Mall's long-term redevelopment, which began in 2021 with the demolition of the former Sears department store. That redevelopment introduced The Domaine, a residential community featuring 311 apartments across two four-story buildings, along with Hawthorn Row, a new ground-floor retail district. Both projects were completed in 2024. Construction is also underway on an additional 282 apartments at the former Carson Pirie Scott site, with completion expected in 2028. Together, these investments are part of a broader $252 million effort to reposition the property as a mixed-use destination that blends residential, retail, dining, and entertainment.

What This Means for the Shopping Center

Shopping malls across the country continue to evolve as landlords focus on creating destinations that offer more than traditional retail. Hawthorn Mall's latest improvements reflect that shift by emphasizing gathering spaces, upgraded dining environments, and family-friendly amenities. Additional investments around the property include a new IMAX auditorium at AMC Hawthorn 12 and a new MedSpa at Tricoci Salon & Spa. Exterior renovations have also opened portions of the mall to create a more walkable and inviting environment.

What It Means for Vernon Hills

As new apartments, restaurants, and entertainment options continue opening around Hawthorn Mall, the property is becoming a central hub for both residents and visitors. The combination of residential development and upgraded retail spaces is expected to strengthen the area's long-term appeal while helping the shopping center remain competitive in today's evolving retail market. For retailers, landlords, and investors, the continued investment demonstrates how established malls can be successfully repositioned into vibrant mixed-use destinations through phased redevelopment and modern amenities.
