  • Developer Hershy Silberstein of BlueSky Developers has topped out an 11-story residential building at 579 Sackett Street in Gowanus, Brooklyn.
  • The project will deliver 64 rental apartments across 46,943 square feet, along with 3,348 square feet of ground-floor retail space.
  • Construction is expected to finish by late 2026, adding new housing near the Union Street subway station.

What the development includes

Construction has topped out at 579 Sackett Street, a new 11-story residential building in Gowanus, Brooklyn. The project is being developed by Hershy Silberstein of BlueSky Developers and designed by Kao Hwa Lee Architects. The building will rise 110 feet tall and span approximately 46,943 square feet, delivering 64 rental units with an average unit size of about 681 square feet. Plans also include 3,348 square feet of retail space on the ground floor, creating new commercial frontage along 3rd Avenue and Sackett Street.

What the design means for the building

Renderings show a modern design featuring interlocking volumes clad in white and dark brown brick across the southern and eastern façades. The building will feature floor-to-ceiling windows with black frames, while several stacks of glass-railed balconies will extend along the eastern elevation facing 3rd Avenue. At street level, the retail component will include double-height storefront windows, designed to increase visibility and activate the sidewalk.

What does the project timeline mean for completion

The reinforced concrete structure has risen rapidly since excavation and foundation work began in 2025. Crews are currently completing the top floors while installing windows and exterior insulation. The project reached this stage less than a year after construction began, signaling strong progress on the development. An on-site notice lists April 2026 as the anticipated completion date, though the full project is expected to wrap up later in 2026.

What the site purchase means for the development

Developer Hershy Silberstein acquired the property in early 2025 for $16.5 million from Martin Nussbaum. Following the purchase, demolition permits were filed for the one-story structure previously occupying the site, clearing the way for the current residential project. The development is part of a broader wave of new residential construction across Gowanus, driven by zoning changes and increased demand for housing in the neighborhood.

What the amenities and location mean for renters

Residents will have access to several amenities, including bike storage for 32 bicycles in the cellar, a fitness center, and outdoor recreation areas on the first floor and rooftop. The building sits near the Union Street subway station, providing access to the R train along 4th Avenue, making the location convenient for commuters traveling to Downtown Brooklyn and Manhattan. Once completed, the project will add 64 new rental units and ground-floor retail space to the growing Gowanus neighborhood as redevelopment continues across the area.
