Dan Mazzarini, the visionary founder behind the esteemed BHDM Design in New York, was presented with an incredible opportunity to showcase his unparalleled interior design skills when a college friend reached out for assistance in transforming her family's newfound sanctuary. Nestled in the heart of Chicago's trendy Ukrainian Village neighborhood, this lavish four-story townhome, spanning an impressive 5,000 square feet, whispered promises of a future filled with creativity and exquisite fashion.
A Stylish Fusion of Fashion and Home Design
A fashionable couple, inspired by the iconic designs of Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Tom Ford, embarked on a mission to create a seamlessly tailored home. The result? A stunning three-bedroom, three-bathroom residence that exudes sophistication. From meticulously draped curtains to thoughtfully selected accessories, every element was chosen to harmonize rather than compete. Collaborating with Vari Architects, renowned designer Mazzarini skillfully transformed the couple's vision into reality.
The design direction embraced the warmth and layering reminiscent of modern Ralph Lauren, infused with the allure synonymous with Tom Ford. The couple's love for travel and the inspiration drawn from luxurious hotel rooms further influenced the design process. Mazzarini confesses, "Black is an essential element in every room, like the perfect eyeliner for decor." This approach resulted in a fashionable yet welcoming ambiance, achieved through a captivating black-and-white color palette. Each material carefully selected for the house was intended to evoke an emotional connection.
Mazzarini ingeniously used only two paint colors for consistency throughout the entire home: Benjamin Moore's Intense White, a shade that exudes a gentle gray undertone, and Kendall Charcoal. These hues were complemented by sumptuous materials such as suede, Macassar ebony wood, and cerused oak. The final outcome is a residence that effortlessly marries fashion and interior design, creating a space that truly reflects the unique style and personality of its owners.
A Modern Oasis of Light and Dark Elegance
Step into a realm of sophistication and refinement, where light dances through floor-to-ceiling windows and contrasts boldly with the darker tones carefully selected. This architectural masterpiece seamlessly integrates an inviting fireside living room, an elegant dining area, and a sleek kitchen on its open-plan main floor. Natural oak floorboards provide warmth and balance to the space, while Kenya black stone and vertical grain black ebonized wood in the kitchen create an atmosphere of timeless beauty and durability.
Ascending to the second floor, discover a haven of productivity and comfort. The study embodies a Ralph Lauren-esque charm, accentuated by menswear-inspired curtains and an ebony L-shaped couch that adds a touch of sleekness. Meanwhile, the laundry room stands ready to make everyday tasks a breeze, while two bedrooms offer respite—one of which is lovingly curated as a haven for their young daughter.
The nursery exudes a sense of whimsy and tenderness, with its pink and white palette coming to life. On the ceiling, Caitlin McGauley wallpaper creates a dreamy ambiance, complemented by a Dash and Albert area rug and an Hermès throw. A Danish rocking sheep from Povl Kjer completes this enchanting space, where imagination takes flight.
Unveiling an Inviting Haven
Nestled within its bright and airy surroundings, the study boasts a striking black sofa, juxtaposing the overall lightness of the room. The intention here was to design a space that exudes both style and comfort, encouraging the homeowners to fully inhabit every nook and cranny of their abode. The result? A seamlessly put-together area that beckons you to sink in and relax. Ascending to the third floor, you'll find the primary suite, cloaked in a captivating blend of dark and moody hues. Adorned with artwork acquired during the couple's adventures around the world, this sanctuary is a testament to their discerning taste.
To house the owner's impressive collection of designer apparel, a 300-square-foot closet reminiscent of a high-end boutique was crafted. It serves as a splendid sanctuary for over 100 pairs of exquisite shoes and 30 exquisite designer handbags. Meanwhile, the black-and-white bathroom, adorned with tasteful elegance, evokes the ambiance of a luxurious five-star hotel in London.
Ensuring utmost privacy from nearby neighbors, oversized milk glass windows have been thoughtfully incorporated throughout the residence. These windows effectively shield the occupants from prying eyes while bathing the interiors with natural light. Finally, situated on the property are a detached garage and a rooftop basketball court, adding an element of recreation and leisure to this magnificent haven.
