Beverly Hills Heritage Commission Nominates Three Sites for Prestigious Historical Award

In a recent gathering, the Beverly Hills Cultural Heritage Commission spotlighted three iconic locales for the prestigious Golden Shield Award. Meanwhile, they also refined the plaque language for two past honorees.

Wonderbread Bakery's Timeless Aroma

Delving into nostalgia, the commission's choices included the former Wonderbread Bakery, evoking Commissioner Craig Corman's childhood memories. The bakery, also known as Holsum Bakery, commenced its aromatic journey in 1924, leaving a lasting imprint on Santa Monica Boulevard. With its red brick trim and pre-sliced bread innovation, it was a significant chapter in the city's culinary history.

Dolores Drive-In: A Relic of Car Culture

Razed in 1981 to make way for an office building, the Dolores Drive-In had once been a hub for car enthusiasts. Established in 1946 on Wilshire Boulevard, it embraced California's car culture. Today, its proximity to an upcoming Metro station makes it an appealing spot to showcase Beverly Hills' rich history.

La Dolce Vita's Rebirth

Facing closure during the pandemic in 2020, La Dolce Vita, another nominee, narrowly avoided the same fate as the bakery and drive-in. A haven for classic movie stars like Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra, the restaurant reopened in March 2021 under new ownership. Its revival preserves the legacy of a place that once hosted Hollywood royalty.

Acknowledging Hidden Historical Gems

While Arturo Shoe Fixx and the original sites of the Beverly Hills Athletic Club and Beverly Hills Garage didn't clinch Golden Shield honors this time, their historical significance was duly noted. The commission remains open to considering them for future nominations, recognizing the city's rich tapestry.

Commission's Commitment to Heritage

Apart from unveiling the new honorees, the commission refined the process of selecting and publicizing culturally significant sites. Additionally, they finalized plaque language for two earlier Golden Shield recipients—Beverly Hills Handbag Studio and David Orgell, the jeweler who played a role in shaping the city's reputation for luxury. The historical journey also extended to Ye Old Bridle Path, a symbolic route from the city's early days that witnessed transformations with the evolution of transportation modes.
