Construction on the new Roper Hospital in North Charleston has reached a major milestone, with vertical work now underway. The shift to structural steel signals that the project is moving beyond site prep and foundations into full-scale building.
Barton Malow is delivering the development and Edifice, a joint venture handling one of the largest healthcare builds in the region.
The hospital campus will span 805,000 square feet across 27 acres and is designed to function as a high-capacity regional medical center. It will include hundreds of inpatient beds, a large emergency department, critical care units, operating rooms, and specialized treatment areas.
Design is led by E4H Environments for Health Architecture and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, combining healthcare-specific planning with large-scale architectural execution.
This project reflects the continued expansion of healthcare infrastructure in high-growth regions. Facilities of this scale are typically driven by long-term population growth and increasing demand for advanced medical services.
From a development standpoint, healthcare remains one of the most stable asset classes, supported by institutional capital and consistent demand.
Construction is expected to continue over the next several years, with completion targeted for 2029.
