What the Developers Are Delivering at The Lucy
The Lucy, developed by SJP Properties, Claremont Development and Battery Global Advisors, with equity partner PCCP, has reached its structural topping-out milestone at 619 Grove Street in Jersey City. Designed by Michael Graves Architecture, the 24-story building will bring 444 rental apartments to the Horseshoe neighborhood. The project includes 13 affordable apartments, alongside market-rate units. Its scale adds to Jersey City’s rental housing inventory while combining new residential construction with the preservation of historic elements from the former St. Lucy’s parish complex.
What Makes The Lucy’s Design Different
The building’s design features a glass curtain wall, beveled metal panels and a cantilevered southeast corner above the historic church steeple. A U-shaped layout creates an interior courtyard, while restored stained-glass windows and original church doors will help preserve the site’s architectural identity. Other historic elements slated to remain include the iron fence, tower bell and portions of the church and school façades. The approach gives the development a distinctive identity while adapting a long-vacant religious campus for residential use.
What Residents Will Get From the Amenities
The Lucy is planned with a broad package of lifestyle amenities, including a rooftop pool, sky lounge, sundeck with grills and penthouse bar. Indoor amenities will include a fitness center, media and game room, coworking and conference spaces, resident lounges and a dog grooming room. The plans also call for a hydroponic garden and a speakeasy inside the historic bell tower. Shuttle service to a PATH station is intended to support access to regional employment centers, an important selling point for renters commuting between Jersey City and Manhattan.
What the Historic Site Adds to the Project
St. Lucy’s Parish was founded in 1884 to serve Irish immigrants in the Horseshoe neighborhood. The Romanesque Revival church was completed in 1895, followed by the school in 1890 and rectory in 1904. The parish complex had been vacant since the parish’s suppression in 1985. The redevelopment also follows the development team’s completion of a 165-bed transitional housing facility at 612 Grove Street in 2023. For landlords and investors, The Lucy illustrates how a large rental project can combine new housing with adaptive reuse of historic features. Its 2028 completion target gives the Jersey City rental market another major project to watch as new supply competes for tenants.
