AMD will acquire Toronto-based AI chip startup Taalas for approximately $2.9 billion in a cash-and-stock deal, making it one of the largest acquisitions of a Canadian technology company. Co-founded in 2023 by former AMD executives Ljubisa Bajic and Lejla Bajic, along with Drago Ignjatovic, Taalas develops specialized, energy-efficient chips designed to run large language models. The acquisition includes $1.4 billion contingent on unspecified conditions and remains subject to regulatory approval. AMD plans to integrate Taalas’s technology into future AI inference chips as it looks to strengthen its position against Nvidia.
