Early 1980s: A Loft in Tribeca

In 1979, Martin Scorsese and his third wife, Isabella Rossellini, made a home in Tribeca. Their loft, nestled in a converted coconut processing plant, featured a Romanesque Revival–style aesthetic. The space, purchased for about $235,000, boasted exposed brick, wood-beamed ceilings, a roof deck, and a bike room. Despite limited details on their unit, the couple enjoyed a cozy haven with a touch of industrial charm.

1987: Town House in the Upper East Side

By 1987, Scorsese, already a household name, invested $1.75 million in an Upper East Side town house. Seeking permanence after residences that lacked a personal touch, the acclaimed director found solace in the five-story property. With a dressing room added to the primary suite and numerous bookshelves curated by designer Karen Houghton, each level became uniquely his. The town house, sold two decades later for $6.16 million, provided Scorsese the work boundaries he desired.

2007: An Award-Winning Move

After winning an Academy Award in 2007 and during the filming of "Shutter Island," Scorsese acquired a 7,000-square-foot town house just two blocks away from his previous residence. For $12.5 million, he gained a space adorned with “opulent hand-blown glass window panels,” a private garden, and an elevator connecting all five floors. Despite a 2018 dispute over alleged unpaid building materials, Scorsese still calls this town house home. The fifth-floor study serves as his creative sanctuary, equipped with a wardrobe, kitchenette, projection screen, and an extensive movie collection.

The Present: Refuge in Routine

Today, Scorsese still resides in his Upper East Side town house. Reflecting on his ideal setup on the fifth floor, he shared with GQ his reluctance to leave. With a wardrobe, kitchenette, projection screen, and his cherished movie collection, the space has become more than a study—it's a haven where he "makes the movies." For the legendary director, this town house embodies the essence of home, a sentiment echoing through the decades of his illustrious career.
