Icarus Robotics, founded by Ethan Barajas and Jamie Palmer, has raised a $6.1 million seed round led by Soma Capital and Xtal, with participation from Nebular and Massive Tech Ventures, to tackle the “warehouse work” of space with embodied-AI robots. Inspired by insights from astronauts who described much of their time in orbit as spent moving cargo rather than conducting science, Icarus is developing dexterous, fan-propelled robots with dual jaw-gripper arms to handle unpacking, stowing, and eventually station maintenance. With plans for flight testing and an ISS demonstration, the startup ultimately aims to build toward autonomous, embodied-AI systems that augment astronauts and free them to focus on higher-value research.
