Databricks Acquires Cloud Database Startup Neon For $1 Billion
Databricks, led by co-founder and CEO Ali Ghodsi and a CNBC Disruptor 50 company, is acquiring cloud-based database startup Neon for about $1 billion. Neon, founded in 2021 by former Meta and Microsoft engineer Nikita Shamgunov, offers an open-source PostgreSQL database alternative that separates compute from storage for cost efficiency. With over 18,000 customers including OpenAI, Replit, Adobe, and BCG, Neon has quickly become a favorite among developers. This acquisition marks another major move for Databricks, following its billion-dollar-plus deals for MosaicML and Tabular in 2023.
