Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) is acquiring Deribit, a leading crypto options exchange, for approximately $2.9 billion—$700 million in cash and 11 million shares of Coinbase Class A stock. This move significantly expands Coinbase’s global derivatives business, positioning it as the top platform for crypto derivatives by open interest and options volume. Led by CEO Luuk Strijers, Deribit handles around $30 billion in open interest and processed over $1 trillion in trading volume last year, primarily outside the U.S. The acquisition complements Coinbase’s U.S. futures and international perpetual futures offerings, strengthening its appeal to institutional and advanced traders worldwide.
