Evolution of the Property

Once a thriving hotel, the Sportsmen’s Lodge permanently closed during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, only the neighboring Shops at Sportsmen’s Lodge remain active, featuring popular retailers such as Erewhon and Allbirds. Previous attempts at redevelopment include plans for a superstore in the '90s and a boutique shopping center in 2009, all of which faced obstacles.

Project Details and Opposition

The proposed development comprises 520 apartment units, including 78 designated for low-income tenants, alongside 46,000 square feet of commercial space. Despite appeals from stakeholders such as Erewhon, the Studio City Residents Association, and Unite Here Local 11, the City Council's Planning and Land Use Management Committee denied these appeals, advancing the project for a full council vote.

Sportsmen’s Lodge holds a significant place in local history, dating back to its ownership by actors Noah and Wallace Beery in the 1930s. Over the years, it became a popular venue for various events, symbolizing a bygone era of Hollywood glamour. Efforts to preserve its historical integrity clash with the push for urban development.

Community Concerns and Response

Residents and advocacy groups express apprehension over the project's scale, citing issues such as increased congestion, noise pollution, and the loss of mature trees. While the developer justifies the building's height with a density bonus, locals like Amy Minteer emphasize the need to mitigate adverse impacts on the community.

Political Response and Future Outlook

While some community members express support for the development due to promised job opportunities and housing solutions, others, including Councilmember Nithya Raman's office, express reservations. Despite acknowledging the project's housing benefits, officials lament the inevitable demolition of the historic hotel, constrained by state laws favoring housing development over preservation efforts.
