Sotheby’s, under the leadership of CEO Charles F. Stewart, auctioned off the largest known piece of Mars on Earth — a 54-pound Martian meteorite named NWA 16788 — for nearly $5.3 million, surpassing its $4 million high estimate. The rare rock, which represents 6.5% of all known Martian material on Earth, traveled 140 million miles through space before landing in Niger’s Agadez Region in 2023. Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s vice chairman of science and natural history, called the find "a massive dataset" that could help unlock secrets about Mars.
