Illinois Governor Pritzker Unveils $900M Blueprint for Historic Stateville & Logan Prisons Revamp

The state of Illinois has unveiled plans to invest a significant sum, ranging from $805 million to $935 million, in the reconstruction of two prisons. These efforts will encompass the demolition and rebuilding of Stateville Correctional Center, a historically significant facility, and Logan Correctional Center.

Funding Announcement by Governor JB Pritzker

Governor JB Pritzker disclosed the allocation of funds to support the reconstruction projects. The initiative aims to revamp Logan Correctional Center, situated in downstate Lincoln, and Stateville Correctional Center, located approximately 40 miles southwest of Chicago. Under the plan, Stateville will be replaced with a new facility on its existing site, while Logan will undergo reconstruction at a yet-to-be-determined location.

Expected Savings and Historical Context

The state anticipates that the new prisons will generate savings of around $34 million annually in operational and maintenance costs. Notably, Stateville Correctional Center, established in 1925, and Logan Correctional Center, operational since 1978, hold historical significance within the state's correctional system.

Commitment to Infrastructure Development

Governor Pritzker emphasized the commitment to enhancing the state's infrastructure through the allocation of capital funds for Stateville and Logan. The design and construction of the new facilities are slated to be completed over the next three to five years, marking a significant step towards modernizing Illinois' prison infrastructure.
